Pathways in focus
What to know before you apply
A general overview of the main pathways. Requirements change and depend on your circumstances, so use this as a starting point, not as advice.
Skilled migration
For professionals and tradespeople whose occupation is in demand in Australia.
Key considerations
- Your occupation generally needs to appear on a relevant skilled occupation list.
- Most pathways need a positive skills assessment from the authority for your occupation.
- Points-tested visas consider factors such as age, English ability, qualifications and work experience.
- Some pathways also require nomination by a state or territory government.
Employer sponsorship
For workers with a job offer from an Australian employer, and the businesses sponsoring them.
Key considerations
- The employer usually needs approval as a sponsor and must nominate the position.
- The role and salary need to meet the requirements of the program.
- The worker must show the skills, qualifications and English the role requires.
- There are temporary and permanent options, and some temporary visas lead to permanent residence.
Student migration
For people planning to study a registered course in Australia.
Key considerations
- Your course must be registered for international students on CRICOS.
- You need to show you are a genuine student with the means to support your stay.
- Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the duration of your visa.
- Student visas come with conditions, including limits on work, that you must follow.
Partner and family migration
For partners and family members of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens.
Key considerations
- Partner visas require strong evidence of a genuine and continuing relationship.
- Different visas apply depending on whether you apply in or outside Australia.
- Your sponsor also needs to meet sponsorship requirements.
- Parent visa options differ significantly in cost and waiting time.
Visitor visas
For holidays, visiting family and friends, and short business trips.
Key considerations
- You need to show you intend a genuine temporary stay.
- Evidence of enough money to support your visit is usually required.
- Work is generally not permitted on a visitor visa.
- Holders of some passports can apply for an ETA or eVisitor instead.
Graduate visas
For international students who have recently completed eligible study in Australia.
Key considerations
- Eligibility depends on your qualification, when you completed it, your age and your English.
- There is a strict deadline to apply after completing your course.
- You generally need to hold an eligible visa when you apply.
- Many graduates use this period to build experience for a skilled or employer sponsored visa.
Business and investment
For business owners, senior executives, entrepreneurs and investors.
Key considerations
- Some business and investment programs are closed to new applications.
- Other options, including employer sponsored and state-nominated pathways, may suit business owners.
- Business history, ownership, turnover and assets all need careful evidence.
- Settings change often, so the strategy should be checked against current rules.
Regional opportunities
For skilled workers and families open to building a life outside Australia's largest cities.
Key considerations
- Australia's definition of a regional area is broader than many people expect.
- Regional provisional visas require you to live and work in a designated regional area.
- Some regional visas offer a pathway to permanent residence once conditions are met.
- Each state and territory runs its own nomination program with different priorities.

FAQ
Common questions
General information only. For advice about your situation, please book a consultation.
What happens during a consultation?
We discuss your background, goals and timeframe, explain the visa options that may be available to you, and outline the next steps, documents and likely costs involved. It helps to have your passport, qualifications, work history and any current visa details to hand.
Can you guarantee that my visa will be granted?
No. Visa decisions are made by the Department of Home Affairs, and no migration agent can guarantee an outcome. What we can do is give you honest advice about your prospects and help you prepare a complete, well-supported application.
Do I have to use a migration agent?
No. You can apply for an Australian visa yourself. Many people choose a registered migration agent for help understanding their options, preparing evidence and communicating with the Department.
How are your fees worked out?
Fees depend on the visa and the complexity of your matter. Before any work begins, you receive a written agreement and estimate of fees, which is separate from government application charges.
Can visa requirements change after I start?
Yes. Australian migration law, occupation lists and visa requirements change regularly, sometimes with little notice. This is one reason to get advice based on current rules before you apply.
Where can I check current processing times?
The Department of Home Affairs publishes current processing times on its website. Times vary by visa and change regularly.
